My Characters are not in Their Twenties

Most of the characters in my stories tend to be around their mid-thirties or older. I have nothing against young people, but it’s been a while since I’ve been in my mid-twenties and there are so many other people writing about that population, I figure I’ll leave them to it.

I am someone who tends to think that I’ve ‘grown into myself’ the older I’ve gotten. I feel like I know more about myself, what makes me tick, what I’ll put up with in my life, and what I won’t.

Age has also helped me realize one important thing: It’s just a number.

In 2019 I celebrated a milestone birthday that I was not looking forward to, but rather than be sad or feel old, I gifted myself ten sessions with a personal trainer who specializes in kickboxing – specifically Muay Thai.  I have never felt stronger or more confident in my entire life. My trainer and I have a running joke that I’ll be able to take on anyone that starts s**t with me in the grocery store parking lot. 😊

But, for real, that’s a great feeling! Not that I’ve ever been in a fight, or would ever want to be in one, but the confidence that comes with knowing how to throw a punch or a kick (and also how to avoid and/or defend those things) is literally priceless.

So rather than try to reach back remember what my twenties were like, I decided to look around me and see how my peers see things. There is a world full of Happily-Ever-Afters just waiting to happen and I consider myself privileged to be able to write these stories.
